The Portsmouth Challenge: reimagining learning through STEM

Portsmouth has been identified as a priority Education Investment Area in the latest government white paper. Despite being an area rich in STEM opportunities and surrounded by the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, within this we also include computer science) industry, young people from local communities continue to be underrepresented in some prosperous STEM careers. The past two years have been a challenge but now it’s time to be creative, work collaboratively and reimagine education in Portsmouth.

This July, STEMunity will be running a ‘Leaders’ Vision’ event where local educational leaders can find out about the STEM approach and hear from Professor Bill Lucas about the Engineering Habits of Mind, and his more recent report which was published this year by RAEng, Reimagining Practical Learning in Secondary Schools: A Review of Evidence. The event will take place at The Training and Learning Centre at The Portsmouth Academy on Wednesday 6th July 4pm-6pm, Eventbrite tickets can be found below.

The Portsmouth Challenge will launch with a 200+ delegate professional development event hosted by Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on 22nd September 2022, this will include keynote speaker, Professor Bill Lucas who will frame the programme. Throughout the school terms, there will be a variety of CPD opportunities tailored for local schools including free curriculum-based materials, and opportunities for schools to participate in STEM workshops led by innovative STEM professionals. There will be subject-specific training opportunities and the UTC Portsmouth will be working closely with us to provide some really exciting free opportunities for local schools.

We are looking for funding partners to support this rich programme of professional development. Please see the sponsorship packages above and if you require a more personalised package then get in touch with laura@stemunity.co.uk.
