Help Us Inspire the Next 100 Years of Portsmouth
In 2026, Portsmouth celebrates 100 years of city status, a moment to honour our past and invest in our future.
At STEMunity, we believe the most powerful way to celebrate this milestone is by putting young people at the heart of it.
We are raising funds to deliver two inspiring, hands-on STEM projects for children and young people across Portsmouth, helping them imagine, design and build the city they want to inherit.
What your support will make possible.
100 Future Scientists
During National Science Week, we will work with 100 primary pupils from six high EDI schools across Portsmouth. Through exciting, practical science activities led by local STEM Ambassadors, children will build confidence, curiosity and a sense that science belongs to them. Each child will become a STEMunity Science Ambassador, sharing their learning with their school community.
As part of the event, each student will receive an experiment pack, including a Limelight device, to take back to school and reuse. This means the learning doesn’t end on the day; young people can continue experimenting, share activities with classmates and families, and build confidence through hands-on discovery. These packs create a lasting legacy of the event, helping build STEM capital by giving young people the tools, curiosity, and belief that science is something they can pursue now and in the future.
Students will arrive in a welcoming, high-energy environment where science feels exciting, creative, and accessible. From the outset, they will be treated as young scientists and city shapers, taking part in a special event celebrating Portsmouth’s past and future.
The day will begin with an interactive introduction exploring how science, engineering and innovation have shaped Portsmouth over the last 100 years, from its maritime heritage to modern sustainability challenges. Students will be encouraged to see themselves as part of this story, with their ideas and curiosity valued throughout.
Students will then take part in hands-on science and engineering activities, working in small groups to experiment, test ideas and solve problems. Supported by STEMunity educators and local STEM Ambassadors, they will explore real-world challenges linked to sustainability, energy and future cities. Activities are designed to be inclusive and confidence-building so that every student can succeed.
Throughout the day, young people will ask questions, make predictions and learn through trial and error, experiencing science as collaborative and creative. They will meet local STEM professionals, helping them see that people like them are shaping Portsmouth’s future.
Each student will receive a take-home experiment pack, including a Limelight device, so they can continue experimenting back at school or at home. This extends learning beyond the event and encourages sharing with classmates and families.
The day will conclude with a celebration in which students reflect on their learning and are recognised as STEMunity Science Ambassadors. They will leave feeling proud, inspired and confident, with a stronger sense that science and innovation are part of their future and Portsmouth’s next 100 years.
