I have looked at where we can add role models to our existing SOW. We have a black history day this year and I plan to ensure scientists are included in this.

The anti racist rather than non racist terminology is interesting and highlights the need for this especially in schools where we are able to influence and role model for our students.

        Hi Iona,

We have done it in both ways. During STEAM weeks we generally discuss and learn about a wide range of scientists, always including women. We have had focuses on women in STEM during lessons and highlighted through displays.

We currently have Mary Anning, Katherine Johnson, Mae Jemmison, Marie Curie and Jane Goodall that are in our SOW and taught through STEAM week activities. But admittedly more men are mentioned. I plan to add more women to our SOW.

We have female engineers visiting school and a female contact from the AMRC. We also have female role models within school in the STEAM subjects .

Teaching in a SEN school inclusivity is the core of our school ethos.  Our Science curriculum includes regular STEM opportunities that are accessible for all students. In mainstream I am sure ensuring everyone is included is more challenging.
